10 things you need to know about the Rip Curl Pro Search 2019

Your guide to following one of the most southern international tournaments in history

Note presented by Rip Curl Chile

This Monday, the fifth edition of the Chilean version of the Rip Curl Pro Search will take place somewhere on Isla Grande de Chiloé.

The event has travelled along the long coastline of the narrow country from south to north and is now reaching its southernmost point.

ONE: THE CHOSEN PLACE

Chiloé Island, located in the Los Lagos region, is “the main island of the archipelago of the same name, located in southern Chile. It has pastoral landscapes and is known for its iconic wooden churches, built by Jesuit missionaries in the 17th and 18th centuries. The northwest coast, where blue whales gather, also has the Puñihuil Islands Natural Monument, an area where Humboldt and Magellanic penguins nest.”.

TWO: CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WAVE

The wave is a pointbreak with long, tubular lefts that, on its best days, is on a par with any of the best waves in Indonesia. There is also another pointbreak right next to it, but with tubular rights.

THREE: THE FORECAST

The forecast shows a southwest groundswell with four to six feet breaking on Monday, with good conditions and a light southerly wind giving the wave an offshore feel. Organizers are optimistic that it will be a good day for the tournament.

FOUR: THE HISTORY OF THE TOURNAMENT

This is the fifth edition of the event, which had the following list of places and winners:
In 2012, Nicolás Vargas won in Pichicuy
In 2013 it was not carried out
In 2014 in Lebu, Bio Bio Leo Acevedo won
In 2015 it was not carried out
In 2016 in Caleta Pellines, Maule, the Brazilian Gabriel André won.
In 2017, in Chañaral, Atacama, Luisma Iturria won
In 2018 it was not carried out
In 2019 it will be decided this Monday on Isla Grande de Chiloé

FIVE: THE BEGINNING

It happened internationally when the Rip Curl brand agreed to hold an annual traveling event in the best places in the world. In 2005 it was held on Reunion Island, in 2006 one of the best CTs in history was held in Barra de la Cruz, Mexico, and in 2007 in Arica, Chile. The idea caught on strongly in this country, which adopted the idea and now holds it almost every year.

SIX: THIS YEAR'S COMPETITORS

Luisma Iturria, Joaquin del Castillo, Antonio Eudes, Paulo Moura, Nicolas Vargas, Momo Aicardi, Esteban Cross, Francisco Alvarez, Christopher Herold, Hugo Guajardo, Erik Bustos, JC Lombardi and Nicolas Undurraga are some of those who have already confirmed.

SEVEN: THE FORMAT

There will be four-person single-elimination heats. As of Friday night, 16 competitors were confirmed, which translates into a tight tournament of quarterfinals, semi-finals and finals.

EIGHT: WHY THAT WAVE?

Asked why he chose that location to hold the tournament, organizer Juan Pablo “Mono” Barrientos replied: “Because the place is magical.”
