47 years later, today the gringos returned to El Gringo
the wave that they named it; and today, in Arica, the avant premiere of their documentary is taking place
Gary, Pat and Jim, the first surfers in history to ride El Gringo's wave, returned to the break they named after today, 47 years after having tackled it.
In 1977, people from Arica confirmed that there were some “crazy gringos” surfing the wave, but nothing more was ever heard of them, although the name stuck: “El Gringo.”
The wave became one of the most respected in the surfing world, famous for how dangerous it is and was therefore the successful host of several dates of the world tour and an epic stage of the CT in 2007, won by Andy Irons in a crazy week of surfing and other things.
Rodrigo Farias Moreno, the filmmaker and documentary maker, is releasing today El diario del Gringo, in which after an arduous production work he found the gringos and, presumably, revealed the mystery.
One of the parts of the trailer has one of them saying that they surfed a wave alone that was like Pipe.
Today at 19:00 p.m. the documentary Arica Nativa premieres and the gringos will be present.
giving it its name in 1977 when the until now mystical presence of surfers on the other side of Alacrán Island was confirmed.
