Important considerations about the Argentine surfer's style, influences, tutorials, and more than one key tip

Note submitted by Volcom Argentina

Tomás López Moreno is a power surfer par excellence and that is the characteristic that stands out most in his surfing.

He has ridden tubes all over the world, ridden huge waves, and competed and excelled in various events, including beating Mason Ho at the Volcom Pipe Pro, among many other achievements.

But every now and then videos of him appear that awaken what is said in the first paragraph: Power surfing speaks loudly, or rather, strongly.

Below is a talk about the topic that Tomás likes the most.

What are the keys to becoming a more powerful surfer?
I believe that power surfing is something you're born with, either you've had it your whole life, as was my case when I did everything by force, or you develop it through training.

Is it a matter of technique and power, or just technique, or just power?
Technique is the most important thing for the maneuver and the power to be properly appreciated in my opinion. In my beginnings they called me "electric" because I moved my arms uncontrollably and I couldn't control my anxiety to want to destroy the wave.

Could you explain the step-by-step process of these three maneuvers?

-Indo's carving:

We love a well-executed carving, and as a surfer, when you feel you're doing a good bottom turn, "loading up the bar," you rise with that speed and explode onto the wave face, and at that same instant, the rail clicks perfectly. It's just a matter of going with the flow (obviously there's a lot of technique involved, but I'd have to write a book about it).

-Layback in the heavy section:

I studied that layback from Dane Reynolds, a raw and powerful maneuver where you put your knees on the line haha but it's worth it when it works. When you kick it, rotate your upper body, pushing with your arm from behind to the front of your body to lift it and stay on your board.

-Powerful tail slide hit in the Argentine championship:

Like in the carve, "loading the bar" to smash the lip with all the anger in the world, that's how I express myself when I surf. I let it all out as long as the wave lets me. That's why I wipe out so much when the waves are soft, haha.

Which surfers influenced you to be the way you are?
Andy and Bruce Irons, Dane Reynolds, Mick Fanning and Taj Burrow, they all have what I seek to express in my surfing.

What's the best thing about being a power surfer?
Feeling like you have the power, hahaha.
