A shark attacked a young surfer in California

"I turned around and saw that he had one of my legs in his mouth," said the 19-year-old who received 50 stitches from his right ankle to his left thigh.

Nineteen-year-old Nick Wapner was attacked by a shark he estimates was 19 feet long. He kicked it, made it to shore and drove to the hospital where he received 50 stitches.

A 19-year-old student was attacked by a shark while surfing in Montaña de Oro, California, according to several local media reports. The surfer received 50 stitches in both legs and was bitten on his right ankle and left thigh.

The victim, Nick Wapner, said he was able to kick the shark, which he estimated to be 4,5 feet long, and then drive to the hospital. “It all happened so fast, but I turned around and saw that it had one of my legs in its mouth,” Wapner told The San Luis Obispo Time.

Montaña de Oro State Park Supervisor Robert Colligan said Wapner appeared nervous but composed as he was able to get to the hospital on his own.

The authority said it must have been a kind of “exploratory bite, something that is common in many sharks.” “The shark must have bitten, realized that it was not what it was looking for and left,” he added.

Warning signs were posted from Morro Strand State Beach to Montaña de Oro following the incident.
