A sure prediction for the finals: There will be controversy
And if Filipe doesn't win, the format is over for the rest of history.
With solid waves on the way, the criteria that favors aerials on waves that Slater says are for carving, and the best being able to choose the wave they want on perfect Lowers with a good time per set, it's hard to think that decisions won't be adjusted and interpreted differently by different crowds.
This scenario will seem to intensify if the event starts on Sunday, at the peak of the swell, with double overhead walls that, as the best in the world already said, call for turns and not aerials… Unless we see something impressive and especially innovative in the history of surfing and the boys start sending aerials in the first section of such a heavy wave.
And, whatever happens, if on those walls the surfers do what the wave asks of them and attack the heavy sections with punches (which is what the judges gave a good score for this year) and receive high scores, the controversy will arise because there were no good aerials to achieve those scores.
And with the level of effectiveness Filipe has at Lowers, the level of fanaticism and the responsibility, or rather, the response, that the WSL has given when there is an angry mob of Brazilians, if he doesn't win the 1986 Huntington Beach riots will be nothing compared to what can happen at Lowers.
Ricardinho, Filipe's father, has already said that his giant tent will be placed very close to the judges, literally "to put pressure on them," and that they have called up as many Brazilians as they can to "put pressure on them."
I think there is no doubt that if Filipe doesn't win, the finals will be over forever. The tender Carissa who saw her title snatched away last year by Steph is not even 5% of what the Brazilians can achieve on social media and in mass.
In all this injustice that is the Lowers finals, a much more interesting atmosphere has been created than the injustice that the finals themselves represent.
Or, in the end, what has been put together is precisely what Erik Logan's machine-gun-wielding monkey wanted: Show!
