The president of the International Surfing Association, Fernando Aguerre, supported the decision taken by the IOC and Tokyo 2020 to postpone the Olympic Games, the ISA reported in a statement sent to the press.

“There is no doubt for me that this is the right decision,” Aguerre said. “It puts the health and well-being of every athlete, fan, member or staff member and the public as the main priority.”

"As surfers, we tend to be resilient, even in the most difficult circumstances. Practicing our sport in the ocean, in a natural environment, we are used to changing life conditions. Now is the time for all of us to paddle hard into this wave, looking ahead with purpose and conviction. Together we will defeat this virus and celebrate victory with the best Olympic Games in history in 2021," said the ISA President.

In reference to the surfing world championship in El Salvador, which was postponed until the first days of June, in light of the news of the new date of the Olympics, Aguerre told DUKE briefly: “We are evaluating all options.”

This may involve respecting the new date or moving far forward in time.

It is well known that El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele has been one of the strictest leaders in protecting his nation from the virus, with mandatory quarantines, border closures, and harsh enforcement of those who violate the new rules.
