The extended stopover made in New Zealand by Peruvians Lucca Mesinas, Sol Aguirre, Costa Rican Leilani McGonagle and Kiwi Billy Stairmand was due to a strike carried out by Air Tahiti employees, according to several local media outlets.
The union members are demanding better pay and better working conditions, reports the Simple Flying website.
After competing in Ballito, South Africa, the surfers traveled to Dubai and from there to Auckland, New Zealand.
According to DUKE, Leilani and Sol were able to board another airline and Lucca will do so today.
The camp was scheduled to begin on July 10 with the presence of
Billy Stairmand (NZL)
Cody Young (CAN)
Lucca Messinas (PER)
Sol Aguirre (PER)
Leilani McGonagle (CRC)
Tiara van der Huls (NED)
The following people participated in the first camp:
Alan Cleland (MEX)
Bryan Perez (ESA)
Candelaria Resano (NCA)
Saffi Vette (NZL)
