Alan Cleland and Reo Inaba's qualification is still pending at the Tahiti Pro
With Rio Waida's passage to the round of 16, the Indonesian still has a mathematical chance of knocking Jordy Smith out of the race
Special coverage presented by Surf Lineup
The qualification for Paris 2024 of the Mexican Alan Cleland and the Japanese Reo Inaba cannot yet be completed because the Indonesian surfer, Rio Waida, is still alive in the Tahiti Pro and with chances of displacing Kanoa Igarashi and/or Jordy Smith.
Both Cleland and Inaba rely on the CT qualification of two surfers: Jordy Smith and Kanoa Igarashi.
According to the regulations, when the quality requirement by continent, being top 2019 in the event, is not met at the ISA World Surfing Games continental Olympic qualification (Miyazaki 2023 and El Salvador 30), the qualification spot goes to the next eligible surfer regardless of the continent, as was Sofía Mulanovich for Tokyo 2020.
In El Salvador 2023, Smith was the only African who achieved quality control and since the CT is of a higher hierarchy, he does not use the ISA place.
On Reo Inaba's part, if Igarashi does not use the ISA spot, that is, qualify through the CT, the Asian spot at the ISA World Surfing Games in El Salvador will go to him.
What is clear is that one of the two, or both, will qualify. For this not to happen, Waida basically has to be champion in Tahiti in Cleland's case and for the Japanese, a combination of results must occur: Waida champion, McGillivray second and Smith third would leave Igarashi out of the CT qualification zone and he would thus use the ISA position.
Things are getting interesting now for the series that follow:
-If Matthew McGillivray loses in the knockout round and Waida makes it to the quarter-finals, he will guarantee himself the Indonesian spot in Paris 2024 and leave the South African out; this will guarantee Jordy Smith a spot in Paris 2024 via the CT, therefore he will not use his spot in the ISA and Alan Cleland will qualify.
-The only way Alan Cleland will not qualify if this scenario goes ahead is if Jordy Smith loses in the round of 16 and Rio Waida wins the event.
