Alan Cleland of Mexico finished third in the US Open junior final
It is the best result for a Mexican in the history of the prestigious tournament.
Alan Cleland Junior, a surfer from Colima, Mexico, placed third in the pro junior final of the prestigious US Open of Surfing that just concluded in Huntington Beach, California.
The event was won by the great Hawaiian promise, Barron Mamiya. In second place was the Californian Cole Houshmand. Another local, Kade Matson, placed fourth.
Cleland managed to connect with one of her left hands, which she filled with maneuvers, the strategy that put her in the final, but she needed one more that would have been worth 7,8.
Meanwhile, Mamiya found two right hands and landed high aerials that earned him 7,73 and 6,67. Houshmand fought him to the end, scoring 7 and 6,67. Cleland needed to improve on the 4,63 that was his second best score.
In the end the scores were as follows:
1- Barron Mamiya 14,40
2- Cole Houshmand 13,67
3- Alan Cleland 11,13
4- Kade Matson 10,27
In the rest of the competition, Hawaiian Zoe McDoughall was crowned pro junior champion. In the women's CT, the quarterfinalists were determined as follows:
Johanne Defay vs Stephanie Gilmore
Nikki Van Dijk vs Carissa Moore
Sally Fitzgibbons vs Caroline Marks
Courtney Conlogue vs Lakey Peterson
Meanwhile, in the men's QS 10.000, the following quarter-finalists were determined:
Kolohe Andino vs Griffin Colapinto
Jorgan Couzinet vs Dion Atkinson
Jadson André vs Italo Ferreira
Seth Moniz vs Kano Igarashi
Brazilian Italo Ferreira won his round of 16 against Michael Rodriguez but was injured and it is not known if he will compete tomorrow, or even if he will make it to Teahupoo.
