"In the air I was telling myself: 'don't fall, don't fall'," Alonso Correa told DUKE after coming out of the water after winning his heat against world champion Filipe Toledo and CT Kanoa Igarashi. He says this because he is talking about the wave that earned him 8,5 and put him in the mix with the rest of the surfers.
Alonso said it was an honor to have beaten Filipe, who he said was a "great guy." He came to greet him after the series and congratulated him.
"The love of this," says Alonso, "is the key to being able to surf heavy waves, too. Waves that he and his brother Sebastian have surfed or sought to surf all their lives.
He will now rest until round 3 and said he will try to surf as much as he can until then.

He already has two stages that count strongly towards reaching the top 12, and one of them was in what on paper is his weakest wave; he has three opportunities to make a splash in conditions that suit him better.
