On an epic day of surfing at El Gringo, with solid waves breaking between six and eight feet, Peruvians Joaquín del Castillo and Alonso Correa made it to the quarterfinals of the tournament and guaranteed at least their second best result of the year.

The sea was great today at El Gringo and it all came down to courage, class and good wave selection. Both Del Castillo and Correa met these characteristics and went through the two rounds that placed them among the top eight.

Now Joaquín will face the Tahitian Mihimana Braye and Alonso against the American Skip McCullough.

This Californian surfed one of the best 10 in the history of the event today. He went down very hard, under the lip a bomb of the series and after passing inside several sections he came out to celebrate an impressive tube.

After the wave he told DUKE that he didn't know what he was thinking when he decided to go on that wave. He felt threatened because Dean Bowen was next to him and was going to think he was a "kook" if he didn't take his turn.

In two consecutive events, Joaquín del Castillo advanced more than 200 places in the ranking.
