Alonso Correa became the first Peruvian Olympian in history to reach the semi-finals in surfing
“I didn’t find the best waves and I was able to make scores in waves that were perhaps not so good. But we pulled it off and I think that shows the desire and how much I want it,” he said.

Alonso Correa has just become the first Peruvian in history to reach the semi-finals of two editions of Olympic surfing after beating Japanese Reo Inaba in the quarter-finals in a thrilling series.
Inaba needed a 3,17 with priority for about eight minutes and was unable to find it.
With about three minutes left, a sweeping series came in that gave the Peruvian more time, preventing the Japanese from catching waves and finally time ran out without him doing so.
Correa started the series by falling on a wave. He then did a 2,5 on a roof, followed by a couple of cuts and with maneuvers he improved to a 4,17.
The Japanese man first found the best wave of the series, going into a wide tube that was worth 7,33 and left Correa needing a 6, which he got after five minutes, going into a powerful first off the lip and then filling in with more maneuvers until the last section above the reef.
“I didn't find the best waves and I was able to make scores in waves that were perhaps not that good. But we pulled it off and I think that shows the desire and how much I want it,” said Alonso, who will now face Kauli Vaast.
He added: “It was an ugly but exciting heat at the same time, I am proud to have come through it.”
