Alonso Correa is very close to winning the South American WSL title
It would be the first of its kind achieved by a Peruvian man in history. Only two surfers can achieve it, and even though it is in Hawaii, there could be a Peruvian party in Brazil.
Although he is already in Hawaii, preparing to compete in the HIC Pro in Sunset, whose waiting period begins today, Peruvian Alonso Correa is one step away from becoming South American WSL champion in the Red Nose Pro, a tournament that begins next Wednesday in Maresias, São Paulo.
Only two surfers can beat Correa, Wesley Santos and Renan Pulga, in an event that was filled with top Brazilian professionals such as Italo Ferreira, Yago Dora, Jessé Mendes, Michael Rodriguez, Ian Gouveia, Miguel Pupo, Jadson André, Tiago Camarao, and many more.
To catch Correa, Santos needs to finish at least ninth and Pulga must win the championship. Both scenarios seem unlikely, especially given the type of rivals that will be present. Whatever happens, Correa will have to wait until the penultimate day in Hawaii to find out whether the title is his or not.
This would be the first South American men's WSL title in Peru's history. Both Analí Gómez and Sofía Mulanovich have won the title on the women's side, the former three times and the latter twice.
