The first challenge of the year, the Ballito Pro, was left without any Spanish-speaking surfers among the men.
Sean Gunning, Yago Dominguez, Conor Donegan and Lucca Mesinas were unable to win their series; the first three, after starting well in their debut, Mesinas for his part was pre-qualified.
Gunning came very close, scoring 12,5, and Rio Waida surpassed him with 12,53. Guilherme Ribeiro won the series with 13,67.
Yago Dominguez finished third with a score of 8,83; he beat Caleb Tancred, but couldn't beat Xavier Huxtable and Jordan Lawler who scored 15,5 and 14,6 respectively.
Messinas scored 8,34, beating Brad Scott but was surpassed by Cole Houshmand and Riari Itu with 11,1 and 10,27 respectively.
Conor Donegan also came close. He scored 11,37 to place third, beating Slade Prestwitch and losing to Jake Marshall who scored 13,23 and Charly Quivront who scored 11,77.
The women had not yet gone into the water.
