An 11-year-old boy died while surfing in Puertecillo.

The Chilean community bids farewell to Gabriel Christensen Pérez

Gabriel Christensen Pérez, 11, died while surfing in Puertecillo last Saturday, according to several media outlets and communities close to the surfer.

According to reports on social media, the boy's leash got caught on a rock on the beach and he was unable to surface.

From his school, Francisco Didier, they reported that "all medical efforts were made to save his life," including being transferred by helicopter to receive emergency care.

His surfing club, Puertecillo, honored him on social media, as did his football team, Club Deportivo Zapallar.

At the first stage of the Chilean circuit that took place yesterday, a minute of silence was observed and a few words were dedicated in a massive ceremony shown by the local site Latinwave.

“Today we pause to say goodbye to Gabo, a loving and joyful young surfer who left a mark on those who shared time with him in and out of the water. His memory will live on in every wave shared and in the spirit of this community. Now we have one more little angel accompanying us forever,” they read at the ceremony in his honor.

Today, Monday, January 19, the funeral will be held at 15:00 PM at the Santa Teresa de Jesús Parish, Zapallar.
