Analysis: Alonso Correa's auspicious start
He already has two stages that count strongly towards reaching the top 12, and one of them was in what on paper is his weakest wave; he has three opportunities to make a splash in conditions that suit him better.
With two stages remaining in right-hand pointbreaks and another in the, hopefully, tubes of Hossegor, Alonso Correa has yet to surf in the conditions that are his forte in the challenger series and already has a valuable 7500 points.
It is important to note that of the five results (four from this year and one from 2020), three add up to the final score. In other words, if Correa manages to make a mistake in any of the three upcoming stages, he will be very close to becoming the first Peruvian man in the CT.
Looking at the Peruvian's record of results, one can be optimistic about what he can expect. On the point-break rights, such as Ribeira D'Ihas, the next stage, he has excelled with that radical backside attack. In 2018 he placed ninth there in a 10.000 and he is coming off a good second place in a similar point such as the one in Morocco.
Then, on the tubes, like those in Hossegor, he also shines and has done well in QS tournaments; we must not forget his runner-up position in El Gringo in 2019.
Finally, in Hawaii he reached round 4 on two occasions at Sunset and in Haleiwa he reached round 3 in 2019. Beyond that, it is known that with a Haleiwa in place, breaking on the point and with those forehands, Alonso has what it takes to beat the best in the world.
It plays in favor, and this is not minor, that this season the members of the CT are not obliged to participate in the events and that is why there has been a big drop in their presence at the US Open.
At the same time, another important fact is that fewer surfers will compete in Haleiwa, which could also play in Correa's favor.
2021 seems to bring the best opportunity of the Peruvian's career to once and for all get into the CT and what he has already done, those 7500 points, sounds like half the work is done.
