Analysis shows consistency in Olympic judging and "weakens" Medina's position
Folha de Sao Paulo reviewed all the scores of all the series judged in Tokyo
The data department of the prestigious Brazilian newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo reviewed all 3015 scores entered by the judges in the 603 waves surfed in the Tokyo 2020 surfing event and concluded that there was consistency in the scores awarded by the tournament judges.
Even saying in the title of the note published yesterday that “the analysis weakens Medina's claim to the Games.”
The findings indicate that there was no more than one point difference in the scores that ended up being entered after the highest and lowest scores were discarded, in all the waves computed in the event.
However, they point out that the score furthest from the average was given in the most controversial wave of the championship, the aerial by Kanoa that turned the score of the Brazilian upside down and was worth 9,33.
The Portuguese judge Nuno Valerio Trigo awarded a 7,5 (which was also discarded), and the other judges gave 9,8 (discarded) and a 9,5 + 9,5 + 9 which were the three scores that entered into the final grade.
The note highlights that if there were no rule to eliminate the highest and lowest scores of the five judges in the event, the victory would have gone to Medina by 16,72 to 16,66.
Medina and his girlfriend, Yasmin Brunett, two high-profile figures in Brazil, took it upon themselves to express their disagreement on their social networks and in the country's media with the scores awarded in the series in question and also in the battle for bronze in which he lost to Owen Wright.
