Anthony Fillingim is the new surfing champion of Costa Rica
Santa Teresa won the bi, while Rubiana Brownell became the first Costa Rican to win Open, Under 16 and Under 18
The Costa Rican surfing circuit came to an end yesterday Sunday in the waves of Playa Hermosa, consecrating Santa Teresa local Anthony Fillingim as the national surfing champion, reported the press office of the federation of that country.
This is the second title for the regular footer, the first having been won in 2016.
His only rival in contention, Jordan Hernández from Puerto Viejo, lost in a semi-final in which both candidates met and that gave the title to Fillingim.
“I want to thank everyone who has supported me this year, which has been very hard for me, but this result motivates me to keep going. Jordan gave me a decent fight today and that makes me feel incredible because I prepared a lot for this day,” said the now two-time national champion.
On the other hand, the young Rubiana Brownell, who had already been crowned open champion in advance, made her way into the history books because she became the first woman to win three national titles (Open, Under 18 and Under 16) in the same year, the second if men and women are considered (Carlos Muñoz had achieved this in 2009.
“This is my best year since I started competing. This is due to the effort I have put into my passion, which is surfing and competing. Thank you to everyone who made this championship possible and see you in 2019,” said Rubiana.
On the other hand, the other championships that were held today were Leo Apreda in under 12 and Aarón Ramirez in under 16. The day before, Axel Castro in the Under 14 and Malakai Martínez in the Junior had been crowned.
