Several Atlético de Madrid fans and many Madrid surfers were surprised yesterday when it was announced that the club's new complex will have a wave pool using Wavegarden technology.

According to several Spanish media outlets, a long presentation that took place at the club's facilities and was attended by the club's president, Enrique Cerezo, and one of its majority owners, Miguel Ángel Gil, as well as several political authorities from Spain and Madrid, announced a giant mega project with structures focused on football, but also a wave pool that "will allow surfing far from the sea."

According to the newspaper As, in response to a query from the media, Wavegardn said that “this project is strategic for them and that the necessary procedures for the development of the surf park with their technology in this location are progressing satisfactorily.”
