“Australian judges on average tend to give higher scores to Australian surfers”
Cornell student analyzed the scores of the judges in the CT during 2018 and that was one of his findings although he details that it may happen that all the judges in that country may tend to give more points to all surfers
Cornell University student Jojo Aboaf found, after analysing all 6.600 waves surfed at the CT in 2018 and analyzing the scores judge by judge, that Australian referees on average awarded better Australians to surfers from their country, The university's newspaper reported today.
However, the surfer clarified that his work is not finished and that this may be due to the fact that Australian judges tend to always give higher scores.
However, the student surfer notes that the WSL should “emphasize diversity in judging panels (…) Promoting diversity in that context will reduce the chances of judges being biased.”
Most of the judges, he explains, are from the same countries as the competitors: the United States, Brazil, Australia, South Africa, Portugal and France.
The full study will be published in the university's journal.
