Australian surfer dies after being attacked by a great white shark

Rob Pedretti was 60 years old and much loved by his community

“He was a great guy. Everyone loved him,” his friend Craig Tulloch told 7NEWS.

Rob Pedretti, a 60-year-old surfer, died last Sunday after being attacked by a three-metre great white shark in South Kingscliff, Australia.

The shark bit him on the back of his thigh while he was in the water.

A friend who was surfing with him, along with another surfer, fought the shark and took it to the beach where it died.

“He was a great guy. Everyone loved him,” his friend Craig Tulloch told 7NEWS. “He loved surfing, he loved life. He was starting to enjoy his retirement life. He loved the water. We’re going to miss him.”

Kevin Parsons, who knew Pedretti most of his life, said they loved surfing at his secret spot. “He was a champion, he had a big heart,” he said.

Police were given permission to kill the shark on Sunday, but the order has since expired. His friends said he would not have wanted the shark killed.

The beaches will remain closed until Tuesday morning when the situation will be assessed again.
