Between two shark attacks in the area, the ladies' quarters at Margies were defined

Carissa and Gilmore are the favourites with the best performances of the day. Defending champion Fitzgibbons bowed out of the event in round 3

It was a busy day in Margaret River, not because the waves were huge, not even because there was another fight between surfers in the parking lot, but because two shark attacks in the area had the athletes with their feet as far above the water as they could go.

After the first three heats of the day, with no announcement in between, the broadcast was put on hold. Tyler Wright and Paige Hareb were about to enter the water. About 10 minutes later, the WSL announcer read a statement indicating that an attack had taken place near the championships, in Gracetown, and that they were going to execute the safety protocol.

A 37-year-old man was injured in the wave called Cobblestone and rushed by helicopter to the nearest hospital.

An hour and a half later the event returned and was able to take place without any further incidents.

The defending champion of the tournament, Sally Fitzgibbons, had some problems when she was unable to beat Tyler Wright and Johanne Defay in round 3. Coco Ho, Caroline Marks, Silvana Lima and Malia Manuel, who had been performing well and were eliminated, also had problems.

Carissa Moore was the author of the performance of the day, scoring 17,37, although Steph Gilmore was not far behind and scored 17,1. The quarterfinals were determined as follows:

CF 1: Carissa Moore (HAW) vs. Tatiana Weston-Webb (HAW)
CF 2: Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) vs. Bronte Macaulay (AUS)
CF 3: Nikki Van Dijk (AUS) vs. Johanne Defay (FRA)
CF 4: Tyler Wright (AUS) vs. Lakey Peterson (USA)

Coco Ho demonstrated world champion surfing in round 2. She was unable to maintain it in her next match, which explains why she has yet to come close to being a champion.

The event came to an end with the announcement that it would resume in two days. On Tuesday, the conditions will not be optimal and therefore there will be no tournament. On Wednesday, a good swell is expected to arrive and with it the possibility of the tournament ending.

Shortly afterwards, local media reported a new attack, in Lefties, a few kilometres from where the first one took place. A 41-year-old Danish surfer was bitten by a four-metre white shark, but less seriously than the previous one. He was treated on the spot.
