Brazil canceled its participation in the World Surfing Games at the last minute
The president of the confederation, Adalvo Argolo, blamed the bureaucracy of the Olympic Committee. The surfing community did not hide its anger
Brazil will not participate in the ISA World Surfing Games, which begin on September 15 in Thara, Japan. The Brazilian Surfing Confederation (CBS) notified all its athletes of the news yesterday and today, and there is much indignation in the surfing community, reported several local specialized media.
Fabio Gouveia, the legendary former top 5 of the CT, wrote on Instagram: “A blunder to the max”, referring to what was done by the president of CBS, Adalvo Argolo, responding to another top of the CT, Jacqueline Silva, who wrote that it was a lack of respect towards the team and that it is a "shameful and absurd event".
Another person who spoke out was Filipe Toledo, who wrote on his Instagram: "CBS, what a shame, I hope this never happens again with any athlete from our country! And that you can treat them as they deserve, with respect!"

According to what the president of the Brazilian surfing governing body told the specialized website Waves, they could not deal with the bureaucracy of the Brazilian Olympic Committee, which delayed the issuing of the tickets because, first, Japan delayed sending the invitation letters and finally, after it was put out to tender in three travel agencies, the chosen one passed on an itinerary that included a stopover in the United States and the three women traveling did not have an American visa.
The Brazilian team was made up of Ian Gouveia, Marcos Corrêa, Geovane Ferreira, Larissa dos Santos, Gilvanita Ferreira and Anne dos Santos.
Faced with this situation, they sent a WhatsApp message to the team members saying that they would not be traveling.
According to what authorities of said federation reported in a note that DUKE published a month ago, the Brazilian Surfing Confederation will receive $400.000 this year from the government.
The situation has some important implications because with this absence Brazil will not be fighting for the top-ranking places for the Lima 2019 Pan American Games. Two women and two men will qualify for these games of a totally Olympic nature and with the enormous importance that this has for the coffers that each government dedicates to the qualified athletes.
On the other hand, the rest of the Pan American nations are celebrating, because they have eliminated Brazil, the big favorite, from the race for those four places.
The event will begin on September 15th.
