Brazil won everything
The title, the triple crown and the Pipe Masters
The Brazilians had, for the second time in history, a full party in Hawaii yesterday, winning the world title, the Triple Crown and the Pipe Masters. This had only happened in 2015 when Adriano de Souza won the world title and the Pipe Masters and Gabriel Medina won the Triple Crown.
In this case Medina won the world title, the Pipe Masters, Jessé Mendes the triple crown.
Brazilian supremacy in Hawaiian waters, something that was criticized as a weak point of the surfers from that country, has changed since 2014 when Medina won his first title.
And Jessé Mendes, who was not fighting for the title but rather for reclassification in a series of tournaments that had good waves, made it clear that it is not up to Brazilian champions to win in Hawaii but rather any Brazilian.
“I’ve been coming to Hawaii for 13 years and this was always a dream, but a distant dream,” said Jesse Mendes about his victory. “To have fought against Joel Parkinson (for the triple crown), one of the best surfers in history, was a great honor,” he added.
Yesterday's events were one more element that made it clear that the Brazilian storm is here to stay.
Final result of the Pipe Masters:
1- Gabriel Medina
2- Julian Wilson
3- Jordy Smith and Kelly Slater
5- Sebastian Zietz, Conner Coffin, Yago Dora and Joan Duru
The only thing Brazil did not win this year in this circuit definition was the rookie of the year title that went to Australian Wade Carmichael.
