The first medal of the Pan American surfing competition was won by Brazil in the SUP race that just ended in Punta Rocas. Lena Guimaraes was second and third during the four-kilometer race but kept a reasonable distance from the leader of the entire race, Candice Appleby.

When they reached the shore, a giant wave swept the American away, and the Brazilian managed the situation in the waves much better.

In the middle of the scramble, Guimaraes ran out with the oar in his hand and won the race, hugging his coach and throwing himself to the ground. Appleby came next, who won silver, and then Maricarmen Rivera took bronze.

Gold: Lena Guimaraes from Puerto Rico
Silver: Candice Appleby from the United States
Bronze: Maricarmen Rivera from Puerto Rico
