The World Surf League has once again changed the 2021 calendar and decided to cancel the Brazilian stage due to the abundance of Covid cases there and also moved the dates of the Mexican stage and the Tahiti stage, which would be the last before the Lowers finals that will determine the world champions.
The statement said “an abundance of caution for the safety of athletes, staff and the local community” was the reason for the cancellation of the Brazilian leg.
The event in Mexico, which was scheduled to take place from July 5 to 15, will be held after Tokyo 2020, between August 10 and 20. The statement said this will give time to quarantine those who need to do so.
This is also why the Tahiti stage has been moved and will now take place between August 24 and September 3.
The finals will take place immediately after this in Lowers, from 9 to 17 September.
This will conclude the WSL's shortest tour since 2001, when the attack on the Twin Towers brought the world to a standstill.
