Brisa had Marks on the ropes but said goodbye to Newcastle in the ninth
His second third round result of the season
Costa Rican Brisa Hennessy said goodbye today to the Rip Curl Newcastle Pro, the second stage of the 2020-2021 world surfing tour, which was contested on fun pointbreak rights.
In a very tight series with few waves, she was unable to beat the American Caroline Marks by 8,66 (4,33+4,33) to 7,93 (5,1+2,83).
The Costa Rican had the best wave of the series and in the last five minutes she needed 3,6 to advance, which made the top 5, Marks, desperate, who paddled all over the lineup trying to stop Brisa from taking waves. She found one, but it wasn't enough and then, with priority, she couldn't find it.
This is Brisa's second ninth of the year, having lost to Steph Gilmore in Honolua by a similar margin: 15,10 to 14,53. She now has 5220 and will need to improve her results if she wants to stay in the top 10 to fight for the 2022 CT or enter the top 5 that will define the world championship in Lowers in September.
The competition defined the quarter-finalists, who are as follows:
SERIES 1: Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) vs. Isabella Nichols (AUS)
SERIES 2: Keely Andrew (AUS) vs. Courtney Conlogue (USA)
SERIES 3: Carissa Moore (HAW) vs. Johanne Defay (FRA)
SERIES 4: Bronte Macaulay (AUS) vs. Caroline Marks (USA)
At the men's level, the Round 3 entrants were defined after Jadson Andre, Mikey Wright, Matt Banting and Matthew McGillivray withdrew from the event.
This is how the round of 32 is formed:
SERIES 1: Gabriel Medina (BRA) vs. Connor O'Leary (AUS)
SERIES 2: Frederico Morais (PRT) vs. Adrian Buchan (AUS)
SERIES 3: Jeremy Flores (FRA) vs. Adriano de Souza (BRA)
SERIES 4: Julian Wilson (AUS) vs. Jack Robinson (AUS)
SERIES 5: John John Florence (HAW) vs. Morgan Cibilic (AUS)
