Costa Rican surfer Brisa Hennessy injured her left eardrum while competing in her round 1 heat of the CT 3 of the year in Portugal and had to abandon the tournament in the middle of the heat.

With just over 15 minutes left in his heat, he surfed a wave, floated, and jumped off the wagon to surf another.

According to WSL commentator Kaipo Guerrero, the board hit his head, although it is not known for certain whether it was that or the pressure of the water that caused the injury.

Seconds later, Brisa gestured for help and was then assisted on the sand, leaving the series with two surfers, Sally Fitzgibbons and Tyler Wright, and giving way to the elimination round for Luana Silva and Tatiana Weston Webb.

“It’s not how I wanted to start here in Portugal, but that’s life sometimes. I’m really bummed that I ruptured my eardrum and unfortunately forced me to withdraw from the event. It’s time to give my body the rest it needs. Thanks to the medical team and my team for all the help,” Brisa later wrote on Instagram.

Before the stage in Portugal, the Costa Rican was fourth in the world, having achieved two very good third places in Pipe and Sunset.
