The news that the most important world championship in the history of the ISA will be held in May at home, came as a godsend to El Salvador's number 1 board, Bryan  Pérez, who is now one of the five favourite surfers to qualify for Tokyo 2020.

“I already had an idea that it could be done here, but this is huge news for me. I am totally focused on this event, it is very big and historic for the ISA, for the world and for our country that is growing little by little,” he told DUKE.

Pérez comes from being runner-up in the last stage of the ALAS tour, being top 30 in the 2019 ISA World Championship in Japan, being crowned national champion and winning the bronze medal at the 2019 Lima Pan American Games.

The fact that he is the one who knows the waves where the last qualifier for Tokyo 2020 will be held best is a very considerable advantage, although there will always be those who say that being local also brings the pressure of being a favorite. Bryan told DUKE: “The truth is that I am happy about this, about everything that is happening in surfing, in El Salvador, which is growing more every day. The Olympics will be every four years and the goal is to qualify.”

“I am focused on this event and we are going to give it our all. We are going to concentrate and focus on each series and get good results. With everything, motivated, we are going forward,” he added.

Bryan Pérez's name first became known internationally when the Billabong team traveled to El Salvador, saw him surfing, and ended up hiring him as part of their team.

And the preparation has already begun: “Right now I am already on a big training plan for this event to be super fit.”

Regarding the World Cup course, Bryan said: “Sunzal is a super good wave, where the SUP Surf World Cup was held and there in La Bocana was where ALAS was held, so two very good waves, a lot of power and the time of year they chose is going to have waves one hundred percent for sure.”

“I am super motivated and happy, I will start to focus and start to get into the QS, on the 16th I leave for California with the boards, from there I leave for Morocco for the QS 5.000 to start the year so nothing, to gain confidence and stay focused on the objective which is this event,” he concluded.
