Nicaraguan Candelaria Resano won her country's first medal in the history of the International Surfing Association today on the final day of the junior world championship being held in Macumba, Rio de Janeiro.

After advancing through five rounds, Resano started the day very strong, scoring more than 17 points out of a possible 20 to get into the semis and then scoring more than 10 combined to reach the grand final.

Once in the decision he started well, adding a 5,6 which he backed up with a 4,07 to go to first but on that same wave his board broke which made him lose time.

Resano was then overtaken by Japanese Anon Matsuoka and Tahitian Kohai Fierro, leaving American Zoe Chatt in fourth place.

This is the only medal ever won by Nicaragua in an ISA event.

The country's best result in the tournament had been achieved by Candelaria's older sister, Valentina, in Biarritz 2017.

Resano was the only Nicaraguan competitor in the tournament and, with teams adding scores from several athletes, she still finished 37th out of 45 teams present.
