Confirmed: The 2024 ISA World Surfing Games will be in Puerto Rico

In El Pico and Rastrial de Margara with tentative dates from February 22 to March 2

The final qualifying step for surfing in Paris 2024, the ISA World Surfing Games 2024 will be held in Margara, Arecibo, Puerto Rico, with provisional dates ranging from February 22 to March 2, 2024, the ISA recently reported in a statement sent to the press.

The waves considered for surfing are El Pico and Rastrial, “both offering solid waves with mainly lefts,” the statement says.

The event will initially have 14 Olympic places up for grabs for the top five eligible men, the top seven women and the two slots awarded to the men's and women's champion teams.

“We are very excited to return to Puerto Rico, after being a historic host of the world championships in 1968 and 1988. The 2024 ISA World Surfing Games will be an exciting and dramatic conclusion to the qualification process, so it will undoubtedly be an incredible and spectacular Olympic Games in Tahiti. I can’t think of a better way to end the Olympic qualifications than in the incredible waves of Puerto Rico.

“Our friends and partners in Puerto Rico, led by Richard Carrión, have proven that they are a community and a destination worthy of major surfing events. I have no doubt that this will be a World Surfing Games not to be forgotten. I can’t wait to return to this beautiful island in 2024 to celebrate this epic moment in Olympic surfing history,” said ISA President Fernando Aguerre.

For his part, Puerto Rico Olympic Committee President Richard Carrion stated: “Puerto Rico is recognized as a world-class surfing destination and has hosted numerous important international surfing competitions over the years. We are honored to once again partner with the International Surfing Association (ISA) to support the Olympic qualification system and, in the process, showcase the lesser-known breaks around the town of Arecibo on the island’s north coast. We look forward to hosting the Olympic surfing community and will ensure that everyone has a memorable experience. I hope that others will join us and be inspired by the vision and commitment of everyone involved in this important event.”

In his speech at the closing of the ISA SUP World Championships, the ISA President announced that negotiations were underway to hold the event, which was confirmed today.
