The organization confirmed that the first edition of the Copa Río de la Plata Invitational, Uruguay versus Argentina, will take place on Monday, January 8; it will be the day with the biggest waves and best weather conditions and therefore the day chosen for the championship.

“Taking into account the different models of wave, wind and general weather forecasts, the organization considered that the best day to hold the championship will be Monday. On that day, the swell will come in from the East-Southeast with temperatures of 93 to 95 degrees; the day will begin with an optimal wind from the north gradually turning to the south but blowing gently; in addition, the sun will shine after two days of clouds and/or rain,” the event directors communicated.

“The choice to hold this historic event on Monday was easy: it is definitely the best day in the waiting window,” they concluded.

Yesterday at a press conference the men's and women's teams were defined. They are the following:

MEN
S1: Joaquin Munoz Larreta vs Lucas Madrid
S2: Leandro Usuna vs Martin Ottado
S3: Thiago Passeri vs Luisma Iturria
S4: Franco Radziunas vs Sebastian Olarte

The event will also feature a tag team competition, which will determine the winning nation. According to the team, the points of all surfers will be added up individually (based on their ranking in the event) and 250 more points will go to the winner of the tag team.

The Rio de la Plata Invitational Cup marks the return of international surfing competitions to Uruguay after 12 years.

The last international event held on Uruguayan shores was stage 1 of the ALAS Pro Tour in January 2012.
