Lucía Cosoleto from Argentina, Vania Torres from Peru, Isabella Gómez from Argentina and Iballa Ruano from Spain made it to the semi-finals of the main event of the ISA SUP and Paddleboard World Championship.
The Pan American athletes were two steps away from the medals and very close to qualifying for Santiago 2023. In total, there are seven athletes still alive who are from the region, which are detailed below in bold:
MAIN EVENT
SF1: Lucia Cosoletto (ARG) vs Vania Torres (PER) vs Isabella Gomez (COL) vs Billie Scott (NZL)
SF2: Kaede Inoue (JPN) vs Iballa Ruano (ESP) vs Aline Adisaka (BRA) vs Candice Appleby (USA)
THEY AWAIT IN THE REPECHAGE:
S1: Gabriela Stemfater (BRA) vs Stella Smith (NZL) vs rivals waiting
S2: Marine Kerdeux (FRA) vs Brissa Malaga (PER) vs rivals waiting
The peculiarity is that four athletes qualify with a maximum of one per country and Peru and Brazil have two athletes left of which only one will qualify for the Pan American Games.
On the men's side, two identical semi-finals were decided by a Frenchman, a Brazilian and an American.
And in the play-off there is one Peruvian, two Puerto Ricans, two Japanese and one Mexican.
As far as qualifying for Santiago 2023 is concerned, there are eight eligible surfers left, but six are from the same country, which reduces the field to five countries still in the running for four spots.
Below are the surfers with Pan American chances in bold:
MEN
SF1: Clement Roseyro (FRA) vs Luis Diniz (BRA) vs Bernd Roediger (USA)
SF2: Benoit Carpentier (FRA) vs Zane Schweitzer (USA) vs Leonardo Gimenes (BRA)
