The third Saturday of October will be the official day of surfing in Costa Rica, according to a vote by the deputies of that country in a session that took place yesterday, reported the press office of the Costa Rican federation.

In legal terms, Law 21.241 was passed, which declared the practice and development of surfing to be of economic, sporting, tourist and public interest. One of the points included is that there will be an annual day to celebrate the sport.

"Today is simply a historic day, not only for surfing, but for Costa Rican sport in general. With this declaration that Deputy Nuñez Piña and his entire team worked on, we hope that, from now on, state institutions will give us full support," said Randall Chaves, President of the Federation.

"With the declaration, we want to seek new employment opportunities for coastal areas, such as creating certified surf instructors and lifeguards. With this, we seek to reduce the impact of drowning deaths in Costa Rica, as well as ensure that tourists visiting these areas have a better experience," he added.

According to the statement, the declaration of public interest “brings as its main benefits the involvement of different State entities to support the discipline with budgets and subsidies, among other aids that are urgently needed in Costa Rican sport.”
