Daniella Rosas and Lucca Mesinas will be the flag bearers of Peru in Tokyo 2020

A giant signal from the Peruvian Olympic Committee about the importance of surfing in the country

The gold medalists in Lima 2019 and top 10 in the world in El Salvador 2021, Daniella Rosas and Lucca Mesinas, will be the flag bearers of Peru at the opening ceremony of Tokyo 2020, the country's Olympic Committee recently announced on its social networks.

The nomination acts as a strong endorsement of the sport of surfing, which in recent years has given the country the most international titles.

Rosas and Mesinas have just finished in the top 10 at the ISA World Championships in El Salvador and won a stage of the world tour in Ecuador. Both qualified for Tokyo in Lima 2019 but then waived their place through the regional event based on the result obtained in El Salvador, thus giving qualification to the silver medalists of the event that took place in their country in 2019.

The last and only time a female surfer paraded in a major Olympic multi-sport event was in Lima 2019, when Chelsea Tuach waved the Barbados flag.

On that occasion, the flag bearer for Peru was sailor Stefano Peschiera.
