Ecuador's Dominic Barona and Peru's Daniella Rosas secured at least a bronze medal today in the Lima 2019 surfing event after beating Mexico's Shelby Detmers and Argentina's Ornella Pellizzari in the semifinals of the main event.

The two surfers will now meet in the final of the main event and will have the springboard for the repechage final in which the loser will win bronze.

Barona had a vibrant series against the Mexican Detmers who gave her a good fight with her fluid backside and put the Ecuadorian between a rock and a hard place, leaving her needing a 5,9.

With six minutes left on the clock, he hit a good right, combined several maneuvers and raised his arms in celebration. Ecuador guaranteed itself a medal with that wave, as the judges gave it a 7,17.

The final score was 12,24 (5,07+7,17) to 10,66 (5,83+4,83).

“I'm so happy and full of emotions right now, I wasn't going to give up until the last second. I spent eight minutes fighting a set that wasn't letting me in, and when I got there I said to myself: 'I have four and I'm going to fight until the last second.' When that wave came, I was really trying hard, and then I was able to relax more and show my surfing,” said Barona upon exiting the water.

"I'm calm, I don't feel that pressure, or nerves. More than pressure, I have something inside me that tells me I can do it," she added.

Meanwhile, young Daniella Rosas showed a good attitude in the big sea of Punta Rocas, she surfed a good one at the beginning of the series that was worth 7 and at the end she improved and received 7,17.

Pellizzari fought hard and scored 11,67, finishing the series needing a 7,5. The final score was 14,17 to 11,67.
