In a move that shows Rip Curl is still a brand controlled by the surfing world, Stab reported that it has taken over the main sponsorship space of one of the most traditional tournaments in the world, the Eddie Aikau.
The event in memory of the famous lifeguard who lost his life trying to save the lives of the other members of the Hōkūleʻa operated without a sponsor in recent years after the Aikau family and Quiksilver decided to part ways.
According to Liam McNamara, one of the event's directors along with Clyde Aikau, they also managed to get a credit card to put up $100.000 for the prizes.
It is worth remembering that Luke Shepardson won $10.000 in the last edition of the event that took place in January 2023, a figure much lower than the $75.000 that John John had won in 2016.
