Editorial: The disruption generated by the arrival of a wave pool in my country
I thought it would take longer and my being doesn't know how to handle the information.
I honestly thought that the wave pool, the Wavegarden near my house, would come later in my life. I knew that sooner or later it would come, but I imagined myself with rustier bones and in a much worse physical condition.
It's true that I'm not as fit as Medina or Italo, nothing close, but at least I'm still active, so to speak. My knees feel a bit broken, my lower back too, and my hips are starting to bother me; but whatever it is, I feel young.
Enough so that the wave pool that was finally confirmed today with its opening date will positively affect my surfing (I hope).
Doing a real aerial for the first time in my life? Practicing it so many times until I can get the full rotation? I laugh to myself, but it might become a reality at some point. Why not?
I see consistency and repetition of sections as the great advantage of wave pools for surfing. And I consider myself a person closer to purism than non-purism. I enjoy having tubes, but I think that the best thing about having a pool is going to be being able to repeat movements that in the sea you have to find specific conditions that are difficult to achieve. Especially in Uruguay and especially being from Montevideo.
I was in favour of having that Wavegarden here, in Montevideo. But it didn't happen and so be it. We'll have one 100 kilometres away and I'll manage to use it no matter what.
Yes, I would like to buy one of those plots of land and build a house there, in that paradise. I would be able to go to the pool as often as possible and be ecstatic surfing the chlorine waves.
I put it this way today. Once it happens, I really don't know how I'll feel.
I am facing a challenge of emotions with the arrival of this pool in my country. What will end up happening? Will the day come when I betray the sea to go surf chlorine waves? Will I surf it once and never see it again? Will Uruguay become a new surfing power thanks to it?
There are 14 months left to find the answers to these questions.
I'm inclined to think that the existence of that pool is going to be a good thing, but I really don't think I'm really understanding it. It's a very strong thing to digest without having faced it.
