On the disillusionment of professional competitive surfing that causes renowned pros to retire in the midst of their competitive careers
How interesting it is that surfers are retiring at 30, 28 or 29… What Conner Coffin did yesterday surprised me, especially because Coffin was not a mere contributor on the tour but has put up good fights; in fact, two years ago he made the finals and finished fourth in the world.
Malia Manuel, 29, Keely Andrew, 28, and a couple of other big names, including those we don't even know about, have already hung up their gloves, at ages of pure competition. Why do they do it? The reason is sad: Competitive professional surfing, the world circuit, is not as attractive as it used to be.
It has become a complicated thing for a few, not even a sporting investment, or, rather, a sporting aspiration, but a roulette wheel.
Can one devote one's life to roulette? No, at least not in one's right mind.
But it is still sad. I think there is hope if the sport's organisation returns to what it was before and the other is what Olympic surfing brings, as a big factor for the sport to continue developing and for people to be able to make a living from it.
It is difficult to imagine that the surfing industry and everything that surrounds it will grow if professional surfing does not grow, and vice versa. And it is not a minor fact that the best surfers in the world are disenchanted with the tour. I would say that it is a particularly sensitive fact that all stakeholders should be interested in.
This, described above, is one of the topics that follows below in this week's newsletter.
