El Salvador closed its doors to foreigners for 21 days
ISA World Championships still in preparation but it has been announced that its realization on March 31 will be re-evaluated
El Salvador's president, Nayib Bukele, yesterday ordered the total closure of borders to foreigners who want to enter his country, he himself announced on Twitter and several other media outlets after making a live broadcast through several channels.
The quarantine will last 21 days and will only apply to foreigners; residents and diplomats will have to undergo the corresponding control measures to be admitted.
The announcement is of fundamental importance for the surfing community because El Salvador will host the most important world championship in the history of the ISA, the 9 World Surfing Games, which will award the last places for the debut of surfing at the 17 Tokyo Olympic Games, between May 2020 and 2020.
Just last Tuesday, the ISA had sent a statement to its member nations reassuring them that the event will take place.
Yesterday, after the announcement, the ISA sent another one indicating that they will re-evaluate the holding of the event on March 31. Despite this, they say that “the ISA and the government of El Salvador have agreed to continue preparations for the next Surf City El Salvador ISA World Surfing Games, planned for May 9-17.”
In this same order, the WSL also announced this week the cancellation of two events, one in Indonesia and another in Japan.
