El Salvador surfing world championship postponed due to coronavirus

The “provisional” date is June 6-14

The Surf City El Salvador ISA World Surfing Games have been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, the International Surfing Association has just announced in a statement  sent to the press.

The new date for the tournament is just one month later, from June 6 to 14.

The change of date, the statement says, was made in conjunction with the government of El Salvador, which is in a major battle against the virus, with mandatory quarantine and border closures two weeks ago.

On the other hand, it is noted that this new date is "provisional" and "they are in agreement with the World Surf League (WSL) and align with its decision of March 16 to suspend its season until the end of May.

“The ISA has taken into account the decision of the IOC Executive Board to broaden the planning scenario for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. The ISA will continue its work in close consultation with the IOC in ensuring in the coming days and weeks about potential changes to the qualification processes and its eventual contingency plans, particularly related to the role of the WSG in Olympic qualification,” the statement added.

El  The situation will be reassessed on April 20, they added.

“We fully understand and sympathize with the concerns of surfers around the world as we try and assist with global efforts to contain this virus. These are very difficult and uncertain times for everyone, which is why we must be more united than ever in our love for the ocean and belief in the future. We are committed to taking responsible action and returning to the water as soon as safely possible,” said Fernando Aguerre, President of the ISA regarding the change.
