Fernando Aguerre: “There is no ISA rule that orders or gives directives on the classification system of each country”

The president of the organization that leads world surfing denied what the FENTA spokesperson has been saying

Asked about the current situation in Peru regarding Sofía Mulanovich's confrontation with the Peruvian surfing federation, the president of the International Surfing Association, Fernando Aguerre, was blunt and said: "There is no ISA rule that orders or gives directives on the classification system of each country" for the World Surfing Games that his organization holds annually.

With this, Aguerre denied what was said by the new secretary of FENTA, Fernando Villalobos, who told DirecTV Sports: "We would all like her to go directly (Sofia) but we cannot do that, we owe ourselves to an international entity which is the International Surfing Association, which is the one that decides and sets the rules of the game. Not us."

In reference to this, Aguerre told DUKE: “The only rules are that each country must present a maximum of three men and three women, and that those federations that have athletes who qualified through the CT, must nominate them by ranking,” the authority added to DUKE.

Aguerre specified that the selection system is up to each country, giving the example that some have eliminatory rounds, others have selective rounds, and others have concentrations.

He added: “The ISA respects the systems used by each federation because each country is different.”

In Peru, a national-level confrontation was established after the new authorities of the Peruvian surfing federation announced that Sofía Mulanovich and Alonso Correa had to go through a qualifier to go to the World Cup in El Salvador, the last stage that qualifies for Tokyo 2021.

Both athletes say they were guaranteed a place in the Tokyo 2020 programme and therefore in the El Salvador event that will take place between May 29 and June 6.
