Fernando Aguerre was re-elected for the ninth time as president of the ISA
He does not rule out going for a tenth. "I love doing this, I love working without pay, working for love, for the sport that gave us so much joy," he said.
Fernando Aguerre was re-elected last night, Thursday, for the ninth time as president of the International Surfing Association, he announced himself on his social networks.
Aguerre received no votes against or abstentions and was therefore unanimously elected by the member federations of the ISA.
Having been elected for the first time in 1994 and considering that each term lasts four, if the new mandate ends, the Argentine will complete 32 years at the helm of the international federation that oversees world surfing.
The new ISA constitution modified that a president or vice president can be re-elected more than twice, so after this one there is only one more re-election left, which would be voted on in 2026.
In an interview with DUKE this year, the Argentine did not rule out running for a tenth re-election. “I would tell you that this year I will run. I can assure you of that. I think it is a good thing, that we are in the middle of a path, from Olympic success, permanence and now funding and the development of the sport,” he declared in May in El Salvador (see below).
In addition to the regular ISA World Championships, Aguerre also has surfing's second appearance in the Olympic Games, which will be held in Paris in 2028, on the Teahupoo wave in Tahiti.
Then come the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
“What better way to start another four years as ISA president?!” Aguerre smiled as he filmed himself after getting out of the water earlier today on Instagram stories. “I love doing this, I love working for free, working for love, for the sport that gave us so much joy.”
