Ferreira eliminated Medina and sent the title definition to Hawaii
Wilson had lost and left the door open for the Brazilian to be crowned in Portugal, but another Brazilian appeared who literally flew higher.
Gabriel Medina was eliminated today in the semifinals of the Rip Curl Pro Portugal at the hands of his compatriot Italo Ferreira and therefore the definition of the world title will take place in the final stage in Pipeline, Hawaii.
An hour earlier, Australian Julian Wilson, who needed to finish third in the championship to prevent Medina from winning this stage, lost a heat in which he found no waves against Frenchman Joan Duru.
The door was left open for the Maresias local, but Italo Ferreira had other plans for him in the form of aerials. In a series in which going into the air had been the main weapon, Ferreira did the best, adding 9,3 in a full rotation with five minutes left.
Medina accepted the defeat and said that he likes going to Pipe, that he loves that wave and that now he will go home to prepare and then decide the title. With the third in Portugal he has gained more advantage at the top of the ranking.
