Filipe's preparation for Paris 2024
An analysis of the same 23 days before the start of the Olympic Games
There is a discrepancy between what Filipe Toledo and those around him say and what he does and has done.
On the one hand, there is recognition of the difficulty that the man has in weight waves, in Teahupoo especially, and his commitment to dedicate himself and prepare for the Olympic Games, and on the other hand, there is his minimal effort in going there and actually improving.
It seems that Filipe is not aware of how huge the Olympic Games are.
I think all the surfers who participated in Tokyo know this and that is why they have invested their huge amount to be able to return to the Games: They are worth much more than a CT at a media level.
It is not clear whether no one has told him, he is completely unaware of the issue and considers it to be just another event, or whether he simply threw in the towel and decided to let someone else win it.
He's acting like it's that way.
It is true that we can also think that Filipe is a very experienced surfer, in fact, he has competed in Teahupoo much more than half of the Olympians who will debut in a tournament there.
Let's think about this: Filipe competed for the first time in Teahupoo in 2013, he was 17 years old... That is, he has been surfing that wave for more than 10 years and must have gathered experience.
Who knows? Maybe he's just training himself to change his mindset and apply it to the experience he already has there?
In any case, it seems like a better idea to be there now, or to have been there in the last few weeks, than to have visited Mexico, Waco and Costa Rica, where he is now.
He was at the CBS camp where Chopes caught a small boy and got a good one, with the sea full of people because the CT was coming.
He has everything he needs to be there now, relaxing with his family, with the help of hired locals to continue growing his way in one of the heaviest waves on the planet.
At a time when there are fewer people... One looks at the IG stories of those who have gone there and ended up surfing Chopes with few people in the water.
It will soon be full of people again.
But Filipe insists on not going, on not training in the wave that he recognizes is not his potential.
It's hard to be a champion and deal with everything a champion has to deal with. It's hard because he has already planted in his being and in the eyes of others that stigma that he has difficulty and is afraid on heavy reef lefts.
But as the Olympics, the giant Olympic Games, approach, the stigma will only grow greater and so will the pressure.
He, as he said when he got off Pipe due to food poisoning, does not care what others think, but the reality is that legends are made by others and this attitude is not leading to a promising result in Paris 2024 and what could be worse: Another event in which he sees the waves pass by with priority and, being the world champion, he lets others take them.
Today there are 23 days left until the games begin and the clock is still counting.
