Filipe Toledo won at JBay and is now the leader of the rankings
The Brazilian finished the tournament as he started it and destroyed the perfect South African right-hander
Brazilian Filipe Toledo was once again in destructive form and won back-to-back JBay Opens, taking over the lead in the rankings. In the final he met Wade Carmichael again and beat him with good turns and lip attacks and few aerials, as he did for much of the tournament.
"I just want to laugh, it's so much fun, so good, such a crazy feeling," Toledo said after celebrating in the sand and on the rocks. "I always dreamed of winning, and winning twice is very special. Repeating the final with Wade was a pleasure, he knocked out a lot of big names."
Regarding how he faces the final days, Toledo said: "The final days are now or never, you have to go big or go home. I was great and that's how I won." Regarding what follows to seal the title, he added: "I will stick to my plan, I will continue doing what I have been doing... I like yellow (laughs)!"
If last year he showed that JBay's way of surfing could be changed, at this event Toledo made it clear that he is one of the best at making turns, which is no small feat for a Brazilian who had long been labelled as just an aerial specialist.
It's no surprise that the Brazilian's challenge is heavy left-hand tubes, such as Teahupoo and Pipe, if you will, that will be his weakness. On the other hand, the event in Slater's pool will play in his favor, and that new section of aerials too.
However, we cannot discount Julian Wilson, who is also hungry and whose specialty is precisely those events in which Toledo has not shone.
It will be interesting to see Filipe, in a very heavy Teahupoo, committed to dominating the heavyweights to win his first world title.
It is worth noting how these two are already separated at the top of the ranking:

Now it is the turn of the ladies, who all indications are that they will enter the water for the first time in a CT tomorrow, Friday.
