Five keys to better surfing and a better life with Lele Usuna

From burying edges to changing diapers and everything in between

Note submitted by Rip Curl Argentina

Besides being an excellent surfer, a great person, a great husband and a great father, Lele Usuna is very good at explaining the secrets of each of the things he knows how to do: Have a good line, bury the edges, win world titles, go to the Olympic games and, of course, change diapers.

This is precisely what he does in this conversation, Lele shares five things that he is very good at (some of them, at least that is what we believe).

To have a good line in your surfing:

It is highly recommended to surf pointbreak waves, long, with power, so as not to go looking for speed but rather with the speed that the wave generates, start marking the line. And have the space and time to gradually improve that line in your surfing.

To properly bury the edges of the board:

You need to use as much weight as possible before falling off. That way you can dig the edge of the board deep into the wave and be able to make lines, drawing with the edge buried in the wave.

Using the weight to the point of not being able to do it anymore, almost falling over; whether in a bottom turn, a cutback or a roundhouse cutback.

To win world titles:

It takes many years of sacrifice, discipline, commitment, training, dedication, but I think the most special and important thing is to love what you do; to love what you commit to doing.

I love surfing and to win those two world titles, the love for surfing, the love for competing, the love for representing my country, but above all the love for surfing was what led me to win those world titles. I love surfing so much that I dedicated so many years to training, to having a physical trainer, a coach, to preparing myself to win those world titles; dedication, passion and love.

To go to the Olympic Games:

You have to dream about it, you have to breathe it and you have to set it as a goal in life. And, step by step, get closer to what you are committed to. But, as I said before: The love for sport, the love for surfing is what drives you to continue demanding yourself, looking for new tasks, objectives, competitions to be able to raise and take surfing to that level.

To change diapers:

You need something to cover your nose with (laughs). It's all the same, really: Practice makes perfect and you do what you have to do for your child. Changing a diaper is a pleasure. Nothing is difficult for a child because I love my child and everything is out of love.
