Five boys to watch out for at the Vissla ISA Junior World Championships

It would not be strange to see one of them (or all of them) on the podium in nine days at Huntington.

This Saturday, a new edition of the Vissla ISA World Junior Surfing Championship, the largest youth surfing event on the planet, begins in Huntington Beach, California. A record 361 athletes from 44 countries will compete in the nine-day tournament.

There are young people here who come with everything to get on the podium in the indicated category:

Alan Cleland

Mexico
Under 16

He achieved a historic result on this same beach just over two months ago, when he placed third in the US Open junior pro. A couple of weeks ago he was doing giant tubes at home, but he has that versatility to transition from one thing to another.

He has already been flying in Huntington and is ready to achieve a good result. The fact that he is competing in two categories, as the Mexican Surfing Federation had initially announced, could play against him.

Dwight Pastrana

Puerto Rico
Under 18

Called up at the last minute due to a teammate's injury, Pastrana could surprise at the world championships. He is a complete surfer, he flies well, attacks well, carves well and has experience in big championships like this one.

Last year he was a great standout at the Young Guns, where he almost beat Samuel Pupo in the grand final in Indonesia.

He's 17 years old and the world is watching him; if he controls that pressure, he can do very well.

Isauro Elizondo

Panama
Under 16

Isauro is coming back from winning several stages of group surfing in the United States, where he has not found a rival in his category. He is a monster in small waves and does not have the pressure of winning now because he is 14; he has a couple more years left in his division.

He has everything to get on the podium.

Jhony Guerrero

Peru
Under 18

The Peruvian has a huge desire to win, and was very motivated after finishing second in the South American WSL championship at home, questioning the work done by the judges at that tournament.

On his social media he has shown himself training in bad waves and he arrives in Huntington with a great Peruvian team, very well armed, with an experienced and determined coach like Javier Swayne.

He flies high, attacks the lip, has the experience of competing in events of this size. He can easily get on the podium.

Malakai Martinez

Costa Rica
Under 18

Malakai is a talent that if he's at his best, he can beat anyone at any time. He's got the aerials, he's got the lip attack, and he's got the turns; and he knows how to surf in solid conditions.

On a beach like Huntington, he has everything he needs to excel and, if he is in one of those days, he also has everything he needs to win the championship.
