1: First time
Between October 15 and 21, the surfing competition at the Central American Games will be held on the beaches of El Rosario for the first time in Guatemala.
2: Countries
According to information provided to DUKEsurf by the Guatemalan federation, the countries that have confirmed their presence in the surfing competition are Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua, El Salvador, and, of course, the host nation of Guatemala.
3: Categories and complete teams
The surfing event will feature shortboard, longboard, bodyboard, and SUP Race disciplines, all for both genders. Therefore, eight medals will be awarded, four per gender.
Each country traveling with its full team will bring 16 surfers, as a maximum of two surfers per category per gender is allowed.
So, they would be:
2 male shortboarders
2 female shortboarders
2 male longboarders
2 female longboarders
2 male bodyboarders
2 female bodyboarders
2 SUP Racers men
2 female SUP Racers
4: What the authorities say
One of the surfing event organizers, Eduardo del Cid, commented on the build-up: "We expect a high level of competition from the five participating countries. Hawaii is set up with similar logistics to what we saw at the Pan American Games, with lots of good waves and barrel after barrel after barrel breaking 24/7, 365 days a year.
Guatemala is buzzing with energy and joy at the Central American Games. It's a national holiday. Everyone is waiting for the athletes to arrive, and the coastal area is eager for surfing to arrive."
5: Where to follow it?
As this will be an Olympic-level event, television rights for the games are being marketed, and it is assumed that broadcasting will be done through television channels or their own streaming services.
It has not yet been confirmed whether there will be a YouTube-style broadcast that surfers are used to, or another free online streaming option.
