Locals won seven of the 11 gold medals up for grabs. Colombia, Brazil and Chile shared the other four (although results were somewhat of a secondary concern at this event). More information here

Update 16:30: Colombia, Brazil and Argentina closed the day winning medals

Colombian Freddy Marimón won AS 5 with the best score of the day, adding 17 points and also scoring 9,5, the best wave of the championship. A few days after winning the US Open, the 13-year-old took home the first South American gold in history in the discipline.

At the end of the day, two Argentines won gold: Pablo Martínez in AS 6 (for the blind or people with limited vision) and Sebastián Ruiz Díaz in AS 4.

Finally, Brazilian Jonathan de Borda beat world champion Adi Klang of Israel, who participated in the event as a guest.

Update 14:00: Brazil takes first foreign medal and Argentina scores another gold

Brazilian Felipe Lima won the AS3, the first medal of the South American championship won by a foreigner. In the AS3 final, the current world champion respected his status as favourite and demonstrated impressive surfing, surfing with the help of a paddle, sitting on the skid, as if he were Slater.

Felipe does roundhouses, tail slides and attacks the lip like he was a member of the CT. A beast.

Update 11:00 am: The first two South American champions are Argentines

Rocío Rosales and Matías Sequeira were crowned South American champions in two heats of five surfers each. They won the gold medal in the AI1 assisted division, which involves people with intellectual disabilities who are helped to ride the waves and return to the bottom.

If there is a definition for what "stoke" is, the surfers of these two series embodied it better than anyone. Surfing each wave was a giant challenge, which was noticeable, but the happiness that surfing it brought to the competitors was also evident. This resonated deeply on the beach and people accompanied the surfing with applause.

Upon exiting the water, unlike what happens in professional tournaments where a gentlemanly handshake takes place, here the opponents formed a circle and jumped around, shouting and laughing with joy.

The results were announced and Matías Sequeira was so happy that he went, one by one, to hug all the people around the beach, in the most absolute literal sense; he hugged not two or three but about 50 or so. Then he went up to the podium and caught more than one person off guard, hugged them and left a smile on their faces.

Update 10:00: The tournament started with good waves

The expectation is great, it seemed that the wait would never end, but finally the horn sounded and the South American adapted surfing competition began. The waves are one metre high in the legendary Biología.
